There was rain everywhere this morning, some of it quite strong. I managed to time this round of Wythop Valley to perfection though with the rain stopping as I set off and starting as I reached the car at the end. Those who follow the site regularly know this isn’t my favourite sort of terrain but it is a nice enough easier walk.

Perhaps I spoke too soon about sun cream and shorts as it was back to winter conditions today with a howling wind and lots of heavy rain showers. This is one of those areas that I don’t manage to frequent too often, probably due to the travelling distance involved from the South Lakes. I remember quite vividly walking this route with James a while back as we saw a newborn lamb and various other things that made it stand out in my memory – when I looked later that was 5 years ago to the day…and now that suddenly makes me feel very old, he was 13 then. Gulp.

Heading for Sale Fell from Old Scales. The road walk to here had been relatively dry but the wind and rain was catching me up once more from the west.

It was teeming down with rain in almost the whole of the Lake District this morning, but miraculously I managed to drive through it all and find a dry and (for a while) bright spot at the northern end of the National Park, where I had a walk around the Wythop Valley to Ling Fell and Sale Fell. There were some views from here today, but the Skiddaw massif and in fact all the higher fells were cloaked in damp clouds. At least I managed to stay dry until the very end when the weather finally caught up with me as I descended back to Brumston Bridge.
