There was just enough time to catch the rapidly fading light tonight to make it up to Gummer’s How.

You have to take your opportunities where you can and they have been few and far between for the past few months but it was a great feeling to be out and about up on Gummer’s How with Connie and Dougal. The weather was fairly kind to us – it was dry at least and there were some decent sunny spells. Poor old Casper was left at home with his feet up, he is not so good at all these days.

The thaw seems to have taken place very quickly and there was no snow around at all when we had a short walk to Gummer’s How this morning. It was overcast and dull with the mist hanging over the iciest waters but the temperature was pleasant enough and at least there was no slip-sliding around today.

It is half term this week (and next!) and the weather was glorious today, so Connie and I (and the boys of course) went up to Gummer’s How to take advantage of the late afternoon sunshine. The wind was cool and it certainly felt a lot colder than it has of late, no doubt soon bringing the predicted snow to the high ground.

It is almost becoming a family tradition for us to get up to Gummer’s How during February half term and today it was a good choice as the weather was superb. It was well worth getting out early too, to be first at the top and witness a spectacular inversion over Windermere. Any later and we would have missed it as it was all but gone by 10.

The ‘old’ gang was reformed today when Connie and Angus came with Casper and I for a walk up to Gummer’s How. It was quite warm compared to the last couple of weeks and the snow has receded from most of the higher fells with only a few stubborn patches remaining on the tops. Connie always enjoys this walk and it was good to have Angus with us on the fells once more.

Who would have believed that today would be as clear as it turned out after the prolonged and incessant rain of the previous day? It was to good an opportunity to miss for us to get out on a wonderfully clear day such as this so I even managed to get Connie to dust down her walking boots for the short but exhilarating climb to Gummer’s How.

We had a short but very warm walk up onto Gummer’s How today, the distant views were once again obscured by the haze. It turned into a bit of an adventure this one – we had to get through a herd of cows, swarms of flies, find buried treasure (a geocache), find a dog lead that we had earlier put down and find a lens cap that I managed to drop on the way up…oh, and then get back through the cows. There was even evidence that this herd had summited earlier!

Yesterday we did quite a late walk, coming down in the sunset. Today we did the opposite, having a relatively early walk to Gummer’s How. The low lying roads and our house were covered under a thick blanket of freezing fog so we hoped that Gummer’s How was high enough to get above it – we weren’t disappointed! There is a noticeable difference in the colours with the low sun compared to the richer colours of the last couple of days, the early ones looking much more wintry.

It is school half-term once more, so it was a shorter walk today with a visit to one of our favourites, Gummer’s How. It was a typical Autumn day with it being rather cool and dull yet really quite clear with views to a distant Skiddaw. It was nice to get out early enough to have this lovely place (and views) all to ourselves – Connie and the boys certainly enjoyed it.

It was nice to get back out on the fells after the Christmas break this lunchtime, and there was a welcome surprise with the weather – after driving through thick fog, we emerged on the Gummer’s How road to see Windermere and the southern valleys covered by cloud and another temperature inversion. We couldn’t have asked for better and of course Angus was very excited at being out once again! A great walk to blow away the cobwebs.
