Gummer’s How

It was a lot colder today than it has been during the rest of November, a real shock to the system but with the cold weather came clear skies.

Connie came home this weekend as a surprise visit from Manchester and really wanted to get out for a walk to her favourite fell, Gummer’s How, so how could I resist that one? It really was fantastic conditions up there today with a biting wind on the top. There was a long procession of people going that way as well such is its popularity and of course it is a relatively easy walk. Great to get the old team together once more!

There was just enough time to catch the rapidly fading light tonight to make it up to Gummer’s How. With the day being clear and calm I knew this lovely place would not disappoint as it is a great vantage point for a sunset.

It was great to see a little glimmer of sunshine today after all the recent damp weather and Connie certainly needed energising ready for Father Christmas to pay a visit in a couple of days time! A great little walk this one is…apart from the mad fell cows that live up there!

It was nice to see a bit of sunshine and blue sky on the climb to Gummer's How. On the way up (and down) we had to avoid the pesky Gummer's How herd of cows and of course we had the two cow magnets in tow!

It was predictably very busy at the summit, however we waited and took our moment and had the summit to ourselves after 10 minutes or so.

It was pretty windy today even at valley level, of course this was even worse higher up (which I was expecting) but I took the dogs up to Gummer’s How which is an easy walk at any time. Of course it turned into a quick sprint complete with snatched photos – at least the fresh air was refreshing!

You have to take your opportunities where you can and they have been few and far between for the past few months but it was a great feeling to be out and about up on Gummer’s How with Connie and Dougal. The weather was fairly kind to us – it was dry at least and there were some decent sunny spells. Poor old Casper was left at home with his feet up, he is not so good at all these days.

School’s out for summer now and Connie was keen to get up to Gummer’s How once more, especially as we ended up inside most of the day yesterday in poor weather. It was warm enough but the views were poor in low lying mist – at least we missed the rain.

It is half term this week (and next!) and the weather was glorious today, so Connie and I (and the boys of course) went up to Gummer’s How to take advantage of the late afternoon sunshine. It is almost becoming a family tradition for us to get up to Gummer’s How during February half term and today it was a good choice as the weather was superb. Gummer’s How

Walked on 18/02/2009

Start point: Gummer’s How Car Park (SD 390 877)

Gummer’s How Car Park – Gummer’s How (OF) – Gummer’s How Car Park

Distance: 1.2 miles     Total Ascent: 150 metres     Time Taken: 1 hour

Weather: Warmer than of late but overcast. 8°C.

The ‘old’ gang was reformed today when Connie and Angus came with Casper and I for a walk up to Gummer’s How. It was quite warm compared to the last couple of weeks and the snow has receded from most of the higher fells with only a few stubborn patches remaining on the tops. Connie always enjoys this walk and it was good to have Angus with us on the fells once more.

18.02.09-004

Almost as soon as we set off the mist rose up from Windermere to engulf Gummer's How.

Weather: Sunny and bright. -4oC.

There was time for a quick sprint up to Gummer’s How for a look at the predictable (given the weather conditions) inversion over Windermere. The weather did not disappoint and there were fabulous views from there once more in the early morning sunshine.

Who would have believed that today would be as clear as it turned out after the prolonged and incessant rain of the previous day? It was to good an opportunity to miss for us to get out on a wonderfully clear day such as this so I even managed to get Connie to dust down her walking boots for the short but exhilarating climb to Gummer’s How.

This one wasn’t even on the agenda when I set off today, but as I reached Newby Bridge in thick cloud I knew what the conditions would be like up above. If only I could catch it before the sun got too high, I’d have to be quick though…
